Electrical engineering: a lot of possibilities

Research

Our department is specialised in high-quality scientific research. The different research groups cover a lot of aspects of electronics, such as the design of integrated circuits, image processing, signal processing, modelling of systems and circuits, telecommunication, automatic control, information security, data communication, chip technology, control theory, micro-electronics, speech processing, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, computer architectures, design of micro motors, electric energy converters, highly dynamical actuators, high-voltage technology, electrothermal processes, power electronics, etc. Our graduates can be employed as researcher in a lot of well-known companies such as Alcatel, Philips, but also in new high-tech companies and research institutes such as IMEC. After a research education they are also able to start their own high-tech start-up company as young entrepreneur.

Further studies

Electrical engineering students have the possibility to take part in postgraduate programmes after their studies. Thanks to the broad basic education all options are open. Extra educational programs are also possible. The general training is also an ideal starting point in order to anticipate the ever increasing demand for permanent education.

Work after the studies

Although the speciality in the masters is restricted, the basis is sufficiently and allows a general employment. A difference needs to be made between the domain of application and the type of function in which electrical engineers are active. A number of functions an engineer can practise is e.g. manager, entrepreneur, researcher, project developer, production engineer, commercial responsible, technical services, independent consultant, etc. The number of job offers has increased tremendously the last years. Application domains range from chip design to digital video and audio, multimedia, HDTV, telecommunication, ISDN networks, mobile radio, telephone to antennas and satellites, from computer security to process control, robots and automation of biomedical sensors and computer-aided surgery, from new instruments and systems for safe and reliable energy supply from classical and renewable sources to more economical, smaller and more silent motors. Our graduates work with several applications from daily life in mind in which electrotechnics is crucial.
