Software standardization: TargetJr / IUE / vxl

L. Van Gool, P. Vanroose

We have actively cooperated in the international efforts to create a standardized software platform for image interpretation, 3D object manipulation and visualization, written in C++. These efforts have been known under different names: the Image Understanding Environment (IUE) was a 5-year research project sponsored by DARPA (USA). By the end of 1999, the IUE and TargetJr (the software package which we have been using and co-developing for several years now) have merged. In February 2000, the `vision library suite', vxl, was established as a common effort of the vision research labs at Leuven, Oxford, Manchester and GE-CRD (Schenectady, NY). It re-implements the core functionality of TargetJr and the IUE in a consistent and `clean' manner, thus allowing a much easier use of this extensive software tool for vision research.
